A practical guide to finding, evaluating and using models on AltOpenAI.
Find a model that fits your work
Search by publisher or model name, select a task and review licence labels. Compare up to three candidates, then read the original model cards and evaluate them on a representative workload.
AltOpenAI stands for Alternative Open Artificial Intelligence. It is an independent discovery experience and is not affiliated with OpenAI or Hugging Face.
Open weights are only part of the story
“Permissive” means a model’s upstream metadata reports a licence such as Apache 2.0 or MIT. It does not establish that training data, training code and the entire development process meet an open source AI definition.
Custom licences may restrict commercial use, revenue thresholds, redistribution or acceptable use. Gated repositories can require accepting terms or requesting access. Read the licence at the exact revision you intend to use.
OSI Open Source AI DefinitionThree ways to access a model
- Explore at source. Open the publisher repository for documentation, evaluations and examples.
- Download weights. Use the generated Hugging Face CLI command. A revision is included when upstream metadata supplies it.
- Run hosted inference. In the model’s Use this model tab, check for a compatible provider. Bring an inference-enabled Hugging Face token and sufficient provider credit to the playground.
The playground supports text chat through the Hugging Face router. Image, audio and video repositories link to their task-specific publisher instructions. AltOpenAI does not host GPU inference or promise that every listed model is available through an API.
Inference Providers documentationLive metadata, traceable sources
Public catalogue results come from the Hugging Face Hub API. Search returns up to 60 matches at a time, with a five-minute upstream cache. Refine the query or use the upstream hub link for the full result set. “Trending” follows the upstream trending score; download and like counts are not independent quality evaluations.
If the upstream service is unavailable, model discovery uses a clearly labelled snapshot captured on 20 September 2026. Curated reading recommendations were reviewed against publisher cards on the same date. Licences and model availability can change.

Saved models and readiness plans are stored only in this browser, with no account or cross-device sync. Your inference token stays in memory for the current playground session. It is sent directly to Hugging Face’s router and is not stored in local storage or sent to AltOpenAI’s server.
When you send a prompt, Hugging Face and the selected inference provider process it under their own policies. Do not enter information your organisation has not approved for that provider.
The path to an enterprise platform
Discover & evaluate
Live public discovery, upstream access, comparisons, local shortlists and a token-based playground.
Available in this previewOrganise & govern
Organisation accounts, SSO/SCIM, private collections, model policy reviews and durable audit records.
Infrastructure requiredDeploy & operate
Managed inference endpoints, routing, usage budgets, workload evaluations and service-level monitoring.
Provider and billing integration requiredAltOpenAI is deployed as a standalone public hub. The catalogue keeps upstream model IDs as stable identifiers, so saved collections can continue to refer to publisher repositories.
